The first thing former paratrooper Stuart Griffiths was made aware of when he was granted a room at the New Belvedere Hostel for ex-servicemen was the rules; no alcohol, no drugs. It was instantly apparent that most residents were dependent on one or both. The second thing he noticed was the blue fake-leather chairs standard army issue. When he finally lay down his head, after months of sleeping in doorways and under bushes, the bed had a familiar feel about it too. It was a home from army home: hard but vulnerable men living in an institution with little contact with the outside world...
