Going To The Dogs - Hein Du Plessis

Every addict in the scheme is allocated a dog which is his full time responsibility. Working with the dogs builds relationships and this, in turn, teaches patience and discipline - qualities many addicts lack. Perhaps of even greater importance, is that they learn to care. Drug addicts are known to be selfish people, their lives revolve around themselves, their needs, and feeding their habit.

Training and taking care of the dogs encourage the recovering addict to start considering the needs of another being. The process of building a relationship with an animal, dependant on the commitment of the addict, slowly restores the patient’s emotions. Soon the emotions, first only shown towards the dogs, are also directed towards other people.
