What's up at DUMBO?
New York Festival 2008 - Leo Hsu
12 May 2008
tabacco.jpgNew York Photo Festival is just a few days away and I'm looking forward to soaking in both the main shows and the satellite shows, seeing some old friends, and meeting our guest bloggers Andrew and Michael .  Reading over Max Houghton's interviews with Kathy Ryan , Martin Parr and Lesley Martin, and Jon's conversation with the founders Frank Evers and Daniel Power, I'm starting to get a sense of the concepts guiding the curated shows, and I'm looking forward to experiencing the kinds of linkages between pictures that you can only get in an exhibition space. In the meantime, I'm thinking about what this means for documentary photography and photojournalism.

Jackanory: Looking Forward to the Shindig
New York Festival 2008 - Andrew Hetherington
12 May 2008

Andrew HetheringtonSo what’s in this New York photo festival for someone like me? Foto8 guest blogger, Andrew Hetherington ("What's the Jackanory?"), dives in to find out.

I have never been to any of the big photo festivals like Recontres d’Arles, Visa Pour L’Image Perpignan, Contact Toronto or Photo Espana. Actually I have never been to a photo festival but as luck would have it I now have one in my own back yard; so no excuses with the inaugural New York Photo Festival aka NYPH 08 coming to town this week. New York has long been at the epicenter of the photography scene so isn’t it about time it gave back and hosted an internationally recognized event of its own.

INTERVIEW WITH NEW YORK PHOTO FESTIVAL FOUNDERS
by Jon Levy

eastriverfog_tn.jpgThis month Daniel Power and Frank Evers launch the first inaugural New York Photo Festival. It’s a joint initiative between the owner of powerHouse books and the managing director of VII photo agency that includes participating galleries and venues creating a neighborhood of photography for four days in Brooklyn.

The festival is billed as “The Future of Contemporary Photography” but with such a weighty claim, I tried to find out what place photojournalism occupies in this new neighborhood of photography.

England is Mine
Report - guy's blog
30 Apr 2008
new2.jpg Patriotism, flag-waving and Englishness are once again making the news – just as Simon Roberts packs his bags for a 5 month road trip around the country to document the leisure pursuits and pastimes of the locals. Before leaving he spoke to Guy Lane about We English, an ambitious new project exploring national identity, recreation and what it means to be English.
