Jan-Joseph Stok's B & W photographs of the present day Congo are truely extraordinary, they capture the plight of the ordinary people of the Congo trying to eke out an existance in a country which is so rich in mineral wealth yet is unable to provide even the basics to its population. I was in the Congo in 1962, filming a documentary on the Irish UN Peace keeping force for Irish Television. Whilst conditions were poor then the situation today is far far worse. Author Tim Butcher's book 'Blood River' , written in 2004, describes a country with no law, no medical facilities, no social fabric whatsoever. It is one of the totally forgotten parts of the world, which Jan-Joseph' photographs so graphicly portray. Stuart Hetherington. - shethers
