So what’s in this New York photo festival for someone like me? Foto8 guest blogger, Andrew Hetherington ("What's the Jackanory?"), dives in to find out.

Jackanory: That was the NYPH08 that was

jackanory I was pretty much wiped out by the time the weekend rolled around. I feel like I have overdosed on everything photography and am ready for a stint in rehab.

Jackanory: And the winners are . . . .
17 May 2008
jackanory Yeah Friday was a wet one. It was pretty nasty out so to be honest we hunkered down a bit and tried to stay off the sodden streets as much as possible. Its still only day 2 but feels like I am trapped in a photo bubble. Haven’t even seen a newspaper or anything. What’s going on in the world ? Has Angelina had the twins yet ? Man I am so out of the loop.

Jackanory: Festival Festivities
16 May 2008
andrew_200.jpg So we stayed the duration and did a full program on day 1 of NYPH 08 taking in some of the pavilions, satellite shows and photographer seminars. First impressions are positive. I kept getting people coming up and asking me what I was most looking forward to or what they should see. To be honest the biggest thrill has been meeting friends, making new friends, running into a personal hero or two and just hanging out. My was it a gorgeous spring day yesterday and one  couldn’t help but feel how lucky one was to be out and about enjoying it and taking in a bit of photography while we were at it.

Jackanory: Welcome to the Jungle
15 May 2008

jackanory So we gave it a whirl last night at the opening festivities for NYPH 08 . First up was Vernissage aka the special VIP opening party at the powerHouse arena. With a 6.00pm call time things started out mellow enough but the space soon got plenty packed plenty quick.

Jackanory: My To Do List

andrew_200.jpgSo what's tickling my fancy at NYPH 08. A quick look through the schedule has turned up some nuggets. Be sure to check the festival website to reconfirm times, venues and the price of admission although some of the events below are not officially listed.

Looking Forward to the Shindig

Andrew HetheringtonI have never been to any of the big photo festivals like Recontres d’Arles, Visa Pour L’Image Perpignan, Contact Toronto or Photo Espana. Actually I have never been to a photo festival but as luck would have it I now have one in my own back yard; so no excuses with the inaugural New York Photo Festival aka NYPH 08 coming to town this week. New York has long been at the epicenter of the photography scene so isn’t it about time it gave back and hosted an internationally recognized event of its own.
