Football gives the people an alternative sense of pride
dependent on skill rather than violence. It provides a sense of hope in a situation that to many would appear hopeless. It reinforces their idea of community in a reality that has only offered them a broken and fractured existence.
Scarred shins are a testimony to these conditions, and boots with holes are as common as bare feet. In a downtown graveyard, street kids gamble away the money they earn through collecting scrap. But their inevitable arguments are broken by the daily ritual of late afternoon soccer.
