Return to East Timor

Bobonaro: riding ponies in the highlands. East Timor's mountains rise 3000 metres above sea level. For decades they sheltered the Falintil guerillas from the Indonesian army. For the past 3 months people have been hiding from the militias in the highlands.
Oecussi Enclave: since the INTERFRET troops entered the territory, militia-led terror has ceased but fear has not vanished. Refugees are returning from their hideouts in the mountains but keep close to the peacekeepers.
Maliana: children fetch water in the destroyed city. The Indonesian army and its militias burnt and destroyed the town before their departure as retribution for the independence vote.
