Today Birdsville has a population of about 100 people but during the race meeting the number swells into thousands with people arriving mostly on the Thursday and Friday by car, bus and aeroplane . A makeshift airport becomes a veritable car park for light aircraft. The heritage listed pub is the first port of call being situated right next to the airport and for some it is the only port of call. For many the weekend is an excuse for some serious beer drinking.
Each day a crowd of happy drinkers protect their pile of cans lying at the foot of the verandah from hired trash collectors that try in vain to clean up the mess. On the whole, considering the amount of alcohol consumed, the atmosphere is light-hearted and the only punches thrown are in Fred Brophy's boxing ring which is the last travelling boxing ring still touring Australia.
