Black Gold
The discovery, last year in the Caspian sea, of one of the largest oilfields in the world confirms the enormous economic potential of the area. Oil magnates from around the world are hurredly making deals to take control. From Atyrau in Kazakhstan, to Bakou in Azerbaïdjan, to Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan, the quest for "black gold" in the former-Soviet eastern republics is well under way. On the heals of an opportunity for such wealth comes the savvy, and sometimes ruthless, oil dealers, modern day prospectors of the new gold.

This is a story about those oilfields, the communities that live there and the men and women who work in the industry pumping gallon upon gallon of oil from reserves deep below the sea.
