The discovery of the oil fields put the Caspian Sea firmly on the map. Former US president Bill Clinton declared it a "strategic zone of interest for the United States". Russian premier Vladimir Putin and his generals adopted a bellicose position and refuse to allow the former Soviet empire shrink from their grasp. Caucasian rebel chiefs continue to fight in this region in the name of Islam for independence. The black-gold rush swept the area in the 1990’s with oil contracts totalling 60 billion dollars. Euphoria in Azerbaïdjan was at a height. Bakou, the former gloomy oil plant of the Soviet Union, was fuelled by petro-dollars into a growing and dynamic city.
