Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong Twenty years since the explosion of the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, Robert Knoth’s photographs document the human legacy of the world’s most infamous nuclear accident and other nuclear disaster zones in the former Soviet Union. This powerful exhibition combines tender portraits of people whose lives have been ruined by radiation exposure with haunting images of deserted and contaminated villages and lands.

Stories from the survivors of Chernobyl, of ill health and the loss of livelihoods and homes, chime poignantly with those of the inhabitants of Tomsk, a town in Western Siberia, which has been the site of a series of devastating accidents. Photographs from the Kazahk villages around Semipalatinsk, the testing site for the Soviet nuclear missile arsenal, and from Mayak, in the Russian Southern Urals where the nuclear weapons were made, tell similar tales of human exploitation, disease and neglect. With many governments now advocating a new generation of nuclear power stations, this exhibition is a timely and cautionary reminder of the terrible human costs of nuclear technology – and the deadly consequences when things go wrong.
