David Gray’s first two books, Cunawabi 1 and 2, are sequences of a meticulous selection of photographs from individual projects including Las Vegas, West Coast America, Northumberland, World Championship Kickboxing in London, Ayia Napa, Walthamstow Stadium and Romania.
Cunawabi refers to a figure from Native American mythology: a trickster who turns the world upside down without notable moral or ideological considerations. The reader is invited to make or follow the threads, connections and coincidences out of the succession of photographs, to decide on how to fill the nearly empty interiors, read through windows’ reflections and whether to investigate these open-ended scenes.
People and places photographed are familiar and attainable, introduced to us with a sincere interest, respectful proximity or a discrete sense of humour revealing a rich universe often left uncontemplated.
As a documentary photographer, he avoids preconceptions and clichés reacting instinctively and without bias. Crafting each photograph from human perspectives and sideline realities he reinstates the art of the photo story.
