Not Just Another Story
From the publisher:
‘not just another story’ began as an exploration of photographic narrative, considering the relationship between text and image. As the publication developed , emphasis shifted to an examination of storytelling and the differences between viewing and reading, in the sense that ‘reading’ sits most comfortably with text and the book, and ‘viewing’ with the image and gallery. As a response to this the editors, whilst acknowledging that all books are things to be read, approached the book as a space in which work can be curated. This approach underpins the publication’s philosophy; to challenge the ‘audience’ to view rather than read the book, making the page a place / space for work to inhabit.
The book does not use images to illustrate text, nor text to explain images, nor does it use conventional narrative forms to explain or channel the viewer. It is hoped that the book is experienced as a playful response to the preconceived or expected, the linear, and the conventional way of engaging with a traditional book format
Each contributor has a particular interest and relationship to Photography which differs in background and context from one another. These various approaches resonate through the book, complimenting or reacting to one another. The narrative/s evoked come from the threads and slippage between the contributors, the book is not the work of 6 separate artists, but a curated piece in which the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
"‘not just another story’ intends to engage more with the visceral than the intellectual sensitivities of the viewer: The photograph can be seen to sit more comfortably within the worlds of myth, magic, alchemy and wonder than within narrative or story-telling traditions. It is the intention of the book to exploit and utilise this tension."
