Objects of Beauty by Joy Gregory
11 series of photographs, produced since the early ‘80s, are featured in this journey through Joy Gregory’s work. Her exquisite objects are seductive, but layered with her explorations of the construction of femininity, black experience, and the ‘lost histories’ of the post-colonial world. Each series is presented with her own commentary. With a short essay by Deborah Willis, (curator of exhibitions at the Center for African American History and Culture in Washington D.C) and a dialogue between Gregory and Rohini Malik-Okon.
Joy Gregory (b. 1959) studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, London. Her work involves various photographic techniques, including photograms, gum bichromate, cyanotype and silver gelatin prints, digital photographs and video stills. She has been widely exhibited worldwide, including at the Johannesburg and Havana Bienales, the National Gallery of South Africa, Cape Town and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. She lives and works in South London.
“Joy Gregory offers a critique of beauty in art and culture, and at the same time she celebrates, canonizes, and makes humorously, gloriously real the relationship of beauty to everyday life.” Deborah Willis
