Por Teu Livre Pensamento
by Joao Pina
signed copy
Introduction. “Por teu livre pensamento” – Stories of 25 former Portuguese political prisoners. Photographs by João Pina Text by Rui Daniel Galiza In the 33rd anniversary of the Carnation Revolution (25/04/1974), this project aims to keep for future reference the testimonies of 25 citizens that became political prisoners for fighting against the Portuguese fascist regime, the longest 20th century dictatorial regime in Western Europe lasting for 48 years. Coming from different political, social and cultural backgrounds the selected personalities paint the picture of a dictatorial country and testify about the different approaches to the fight for democracy. Their vision of the present national and international situation closes every interview and raises the question if the actual society is substantial to their lives. Also the Speaker of the Portuguese Parliament Mr. Jaime Gama wrote the foreword of this book, as an attempt to give these prisoners their deserved recognition. The portraits made according their own personal stories, in places of their past (like places were they were arrested, lived, were tortured or escaped from jail), and places from their present stories, aim to create a visual document of what these people went trough, with the hope that this book may help some people born already in democracy to understand what seems to be a remote period of the Portuguese history. This project that originally initiated because of two friends who met. The photographer which had his grandparents on his mother side arrested for political reasons for 19 years (grandfather) and 6 years (grandmother in the book – Albertina Diogo), and Rui Daniel Galiza a young writer discouraged by the Portuguese journalism and willing to work more on long term projects on his own.
