Foto8 and Blurb Present Carousel: The Slide Slam!

Foto8 and Blurb invite you to the first in a series of five special Carousel evenings at HOST Gallery. An experiment in progress, we will take the traditional slideshow to the next level as a participatory “SLIDE SLAM!” performance.

Join Foto8’s Jon Levy with guest projectionists for an informal evening of photographic story-telling and visual inspiration. Combining slide projections with live presentations and audience involvement, we will reconstruct the format of photographic slideshow presentations as a visual open-mic event, a night of dynamic live photographic shows.

Photography is communication, and the strength of images lies in the messages they convey to their audience. The evening will combine film, photography, typography, the spoken word, music and sound to create a truly multi-discipline, creative environment for experiencing new works by photographers, designers and the new generation of media producers. Using any means necessary to tell the story, Carousel will throw out the rulebook, open up the box, and provide a platform for documentary makers from all walks of life to reach their audience.

Bring an open mind, and if you like, a simple dish to share. Food and drink will be available throughout the evening. Anything can happen and future Carousel evenings over the ensuing five months will take this first instalment as their point of departure.

Projectionists
Presentations must run no more than six minutes and should incorporate live element(s), interpreted loosely. Your subject matter can be newly completed work, projects in progress, or previous productions that may now enjoy new relevance and potential within this forum. This is an opportunity to make an impact with your work and generate a response to a story that matters to you.

Publications
The team at Foto8, comprising editors Lauren Heinz, Max Houghton, Harry Hardie alongside founder Jon Levy and the Foto8 designers will consult with projectionists from each night to assist in making an edit that can form the basis for a Blurb book of their story. In addition Foto8 will collect the commentary and visual output from each event with a view to publishing these in a Blurb edition of its own at the conclusion of the Carousel series.
