HOST gallery is pleased to announce an evening with renowned South African photographer Jodi Bieber. Bieber will be discussing her career as a photojournalist as well as the publication of her new book,
Soweto.
Bieber worked as a photographer at Johannesburg's
Star newspaper leading up to and during South Africa’s first democratic elections. In 1996, Bieber was chosen to participate in the World Press Photo master class held in Holland and started working on assignments for publications like
NY Times Magazine,
Geo and
The Sunday Times Magazine.
Over a 10-year period (1994 – 2004) Bieber's projects focused on the country of her birth, South Africa, photographing youth living on the fringes of society. This work was published as a book in 2006:
Between Dogs and Wolves – Growing up with South Africa.
Soweto, her latest monograph, was recently published by Jacana Media with support from the Goethe Institute.
The recipient of eight World Press Photo Awards, Bieber's most recent award was the Prix de le l'Union Europeene at the Recontres de Bamako Biennale Africaine de la Photographie! in November 2009. In addition, Bieber's work has been exhibited worldwide - the most recent being 'Going Home' at Encounters of Bamako 2009 and 'Las Canas' as part of The Human Condition at Noorderlicht Photofestival in Holland September 2009.
Bieber is represented by The Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa and the Institute for Artist Management.
