Join us for an exclusive Saturday event spanning two major London galleries to explore their prestigious Afghanistan exhibitions, with photographer Simon Norfolk as your tour guide.

After meeting Simon, the morning will begin with a guided walk around the ‘Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World’ exhibition at the British Museum. The group will then cross the Thames and walk along to the Tate Modern, where Simon will talk through his fascinating new work in the footsteps of 19th century photographer John Burke, who specialised in Afghan war scenes. The exhibition, 'Burke + Norfolk', will be on display in the Tate’s Level 2 Gallery.

Simon Norfolk has been photographing Afghanistan since 2001. His first body of work culminated in a book, Afghanistan: chronotopia, published by Dewi Lewis in 2002, in which Norfolk’s photographs bring together time and space to stand as acts of memory for a country whose history is so often misrepresented.

Since 2010, he has made four trips back to Afghanistan, reimagining the work of John Burke, whose war scenes from 130 years ago carry a remarkable resonance with the scenes of contemporary conflict captured by Norfolk. A new book, Burke + Norfolk, again published by Dewi Lewis, will be available to coincide with the exhibition at the Tate.

This is a unique opportunity to explore and contextualise the history of this fascinating country with the benefit of Simon Norfolk’s customary rigour and passion.
