Sierra Leone has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world and it continues to get worse. In 1997 there were 1400 recorded deaths out of every 100,000 births and by 2007 this had risen to 1800. Photographer Susan Schulman travelled to Freetown to learn more about the underlying problems resulting in these deeply troubling statistics.
