downturn_280"I simply can't help but wonder when a topic so large looms in front of young artists why not the desire to address it through their work? Is the self still so important? Will it really be how we remember the beginning of the 21st century?”
Brian Ulrich, 9 February 2009

Downturn is an ongoing document of the British landscape in a time of great economic turmoil. Over the past few months I have been documenting signs of the recession. I have witnessed elements that have traditionally balanced a British lifestyle meet their fate, with homes, workplaces and entertainment outlets all buckling under the strain. This body of work is not intended as a critique, or a veiled snipe towards the financial systems, but merely a document, a record of what is happening now.
