St Andrews: A British Education in Kenya

St. Andrews, Turi, is a British-run preparatory and senior school located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. It was opened in 1931 while Kenya was still a British colony, and was originally intended to accommodate the white European settlers.

Now, St. Andrews has grown in size and is privately run with a mixture of international students, and will soon have a sixth form. Surrounding the school is rural Kenya, where the average wage is one dollar a day. The school is Christian, and all the pupils participate in a variety of sports, ranging from hockey through to cricket. This project looks at how the international demographic of the school interacts with the school’s British ethos.
