“In the army, you’re built up to be a fighting person, and of course in normal life you can’t be like that. When you want to leave, there’s no support, no encouragement. My commanding officer told me how difficult I would find life if I wanted to be a photographer – that was all he said. There was a sense they were just waiting for me to join up again – my record was exemplary. And I nearly did. I went back to see my mates when I was at university and it was really hard. It was like going back to a family where everyone knows you and wants to know how you’re doing. It really blew my head because in a way it was really comforting, but it would have been like going back to a destructive relationship.
