Mexico,
The Day of The Dead.
Photographs by
Mike Nelson.

Night stretches towards dawn the cemetery is almost silent, many children are asleep curled up on rugs next to gravestones. The older women bundled in blue shawls sit stoically in the cold morning light. To this part of the lake country morning arrives shrouded in fog.
On Janitzio Island in the small chapel adjacent to the cemetery the end of the Night of the Dead is marked with a reading from the Bible.
The weary people make their way home carrying their candy-decorated offerings and baskets of the dead-bread. The offerings will be eaten though it is claimed they are tasteless as overnight the spirits of the dead have consumed the flavor for themselves.
