Embed with God’s Cops: Part 3

29 Apr 2009

Conversations on Airborne usually revolve around geography. Not global geography, stupid. But where you’re from in the U.S. etc… I think I met someone from every state, bar Rhode Island. I interviewed Haitians, Argentineans, Jamaicans, white rednecks and black Southern country folk. The majority all seem proud to be serving their country and full of belief that they are helping Afghanistan rid itself of an evil presence. At least while the camera was rolling… (See clip)

A good portion of the troops on the camp are on their first deployment and most come across as relatively normal. They have all the human characteristics you might expect from soldiers: Dark humour, a sense of the ridiculous and a bad taste in music.  Kid Rock’s – ‘Only God Knows Why’ was the camp theme tune. Kind of appropriate really.

Maybe I should let Kid Rock do the talking. I am not sure what territory photographing young’s boys in their beds fits but I think I captured the mood.

Till next time sleep well. But don’t have nightmares.
