RISE
Published January 2011
In the summer of 2010, eight talented young photographers travelled 53,000 miles to eight countries to document the remarkable work of courageous social entrepreneurs — unsung heroes — who have impacted nearly 11 million lives over the course of the last three years.
Through 300 pages of exceptional photographs, RISE tells inspirational stories of individual endeavour, of people finding the ingenuity and strength to effect real change in the most challenging of circumstances. Above all, it tells stories of hope.
On every page, RISE celebrates local heroes — mothers, farmers, surgeons, teachers, schoolchildren — people living on poverty’s frontline, who are taking a lead in their communities to make a better future for their families. The book brings a fresh vision for the developing world by focusing on bottom-up initiatives, which empower local communities to find and implement their own solutions to their most pressing needs. Local initiatives tend to be more sustainable, and scalable, in meeting a community’s needs, than programmes designed in distant lands and dependent upon foreign aid.
The stories depicted in RISE come from the Legatum Foundation’s philanthropic portfolio, which in the last decade has funded over 1,000 partner organisations across the world. It is through the remarkable work of these local community-based organisations, started by talented social entrepreneurs and run by dedicated staff, that positive change is made possible. RISE is a celebration of their stories and the lives of those they impact.
