You get called a lot things in this game\u00c9 none of \t\t\tthem particularly flattering, the pay&#8217;s shit, the hours are stupid, I have a \t\t\tslipped disc due to regularly humping around 20 kilos of accoutrements.<span> <\/span>I&#8217;ve been assaulted, spat at, stoned \t\t\tand on one occasion whipped by a schoolgirl (I know some people would pay for that, \t\t\tbut this was in Afghanistan so sexual intent can be pretty much discounted). I \t\t\twas once accused of being collectively responsible for the Death of Princes \t\t\tDiana (which I am quite proud of, only don&#8217;t tell <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/jon\/Desktop\/afghan.html\"><span>Mohamed Al-<span>Fayed<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Practicing my chosen profession\/vocation (delete according to wage slip) here \t\t\tin is even stranger. Like most things in Afghanistan, it&#8217;s never \t\t\tstraightforward. Photography was banned under the Taliban yet it&#8217;s almost \t\t\timpossible to walk past an Afghan male without being forced to &#8216;axe&#8217; him. On \t\t\tthe other hand, try and photograph a woman and you could lose your head. I&#8217;ve \t\t\tbeen to three weddings so far and I&#8217;ve not so much as smelt a female. Girl&#8217;s \t\t\tschools, outside of Kabul, are placed on mountaintops so high that only God and \t\t\tfighter pilots can get a visual. <span> <\/span>So \t\t\tfar so Muslim culture &#8230;I can deal with that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Only this country has what you might call a lot of women based stories. I \t\t\twas commissioned by <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msmagazine.com\/winter2009\/Afghanistan.asp\"><span>MS Magazine<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> to do the lead to \t\t\tthe story&#8230; Initially titled <em>Unwanted Advances \t\t\t&#8211; Facing a resurgent Taliban, Afghan women have had to cover up and take cover. <\/em>Malalai Kakar, a female police chief led the piece. Shooting her was \t\t\tcompounded by the fact that she got shot by the Taliban.<span> <\/span>So far so Afghan culture &#8230;I can deal \t\t\twith that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Well not really, but as you can imagine photographing women is not what \t\t\tyou might call straightforward in this town. The \u00d4whipping incident&#8217; came when \t\t\tI tried to photograph a girl&#8217;s school. Despite having permission to shoot \t\t\toutside the school gates it wasn&#8217;t long before the Afghan branch of <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/jon\/Desktop\/afghan.html\"><span>St Trinians<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the infamous school for &#8216;young ladies&#8217; set upon \t\t\tme. Working round a society&#8217;s cultural customs is part \t\t\tof any documentary photographer&#8217;s <em>modus \t\t\toperandi<\/em>. What I have a real problem with here is the cult of paranoia \t\t\tamongst the country&#8217;s resident &#8216;internationlistas&#8217;. Mainly the Americans, whose \t\t\tfear, suspicion and mistrust, (obviously linked to their love of <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views02\/0112-02.htm\"><em><span>the war on abstract nouns<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">) of photographers has so far placed me at \t\t\tloggerheads with lets say more than enough Yanks to be a coincidence. <span> <\/span>So bunkered down are most of them that \t\t\tthey never even leave the confines of their bunkers at the US Embassy compound \t\t\tbut the ones that do and bravely attend parties seem to believe that a drunk \t\t\tBrit brandishing a Nikon is more likely to disseminate the information to insurgents \t\t\tor potential kidnappers than any of the other happy snappers in attendance. I \t\t\tcall it the big lens theory and if we murdered Diana we&#8217;re a capable of \t\t\tanything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">One major incident (a &#8216;major incident&#8217; out here can be as insignificant as \t\t\ta car backfiring resulting in 1000 NGOs forced into a lockdown) occurred whilst \t\t\tattending a Friday morning knockabout Frisbee match. For security reasons I \t\t\twont give you the GPS co-ordinates of this weekly rendezvous but it&#8217;s held in a \t\t\tsemi-public space \u2013 a sort of green zone <em>lite<\/em>. Obviously I was tooled up with a bigger than<span> <\/span>&#8216;normal&#8217; lens\/body kit. So within \t\t\tminutes I was being quizzed by various panting members of the Frisbee posse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8216;Why \t\t\tare you taking pictures? What for? Who for?&#8217; Sarcastically explaining that <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/jon\/Desktop\/afghan.html\"><span>Operation Enduring Freedom<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> was here to defend my constitutional right to do such a thing, fell upon \t\t\tdeaf ears. I was accused of putting their lives in jeopardy if the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/inmotion.magnumphotos.com\/podcasts\/title\/Taliban\"><span>Taliba<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">n got to see <em>their pictures<\/em> in print. Trying to \t\t\texplain that getting <em>interesting<\/em> <em>pictures<\/em> into publication was hard \t\t\tenough, never mind long-lens shots of anonymous sweaty jocks tossing a piece of \t\t\tplastic around an empty football field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Leaving the <em>secret location<\/em>, \t\t\twhich happens to border a military base, I was stopped by a <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/proggiemuslima.files.wordpress.com\/2007\/05\/mission-accomplished.jpg\"><span>US Soldier in full Terminator battle dress<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. &#8220;Excuse me sir I need to check your camera \t\t\tequipment.&#8217; Cut to me showing some grunt the most boring set of pictures I&#8217;ve \t\t\tshot since I&#8217;ve been here. Occasionally the grunt would grunt, <em>&#8220;delete \t\t\tthat one&#8221;.<\/em> <em><span> <\/span>&#8220;You have the power to order me sir. I will delete.&#8221;<\/em> <em>&#8220;I also have the ability to retrieve the \t\t\tpictures with simple software when I get home&#8221;<\/em>. I thought. Only I didn&#8217;t&#8230; <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0937237\/\"><span>Redacted<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> or not they \t\t\tstayed in the bin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">But here&#8217;s the rub. After he&#8217;d finished exercising his right to delete \t\t\thighly sensitive pictures of a US Frisbee game, he requested to take a picture \t\t\tof me, &#8216;for the record&#8217;. He took my name and email address. I think I maybe now \t\t\ton <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">a <span>US terrorism watch list. <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/usTopNews\/idUKN1447675120080714\"><span>That&#8217;s me, Nelson Mandela, Cat Stevens and a million other unfortunates.<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> So far so American culture &#8230;I can deal with that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/> <span>Afghan Hound<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">P.S. some of my best friends are Afghans, schoolgirls and Americans<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div><strong>Kabul: 19 March 2009: Afghan Hound<\/strong><br \/> Documentary photographer, photojournalist, snapper, paparazzi, picture monkey, painter with light.
