In his project ‘European Fields’, Hans van der Meer documents lower-league football teams across Europe in large format pictures reminiscent of the Dutch Masters. The players are often set against dramatic landscapes, depicting how football is so deeply ingrained in European culture. <\/p>\n
Hans van der Meer was born in Leimuiden in the Netherlands in 1955. He has published numerous books of his own photographs and of archival images and his work is included in major international collections. Van der Meer has had solo exhibitions in venues such as the National Museum for Photography, Film and Television in the UK, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Centro Portug\u00fbes de Fotograf\u00eda, Porto and National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto. He is a contributing editor of Useful Photography.<\/p>\n
Van der Meer will be presenting a slideshow of the work and speaking about his project and subsequent publication as a book. Copies of European Fields (Steidl, 2006) will be available for signing on the night. European Fields is on at HOST from 21 October \u2013 28 November.<\/p>\n
