As we bade  farewell to Grazia Neri and Oeil Public over this past year, and  witnessed the recent devouring of Rex, gobbled up by the still  insatiable Getty, Adrian Evans, founder and director of Panos Pictures,  decided to buck the downward spiral. This week sees him relaunch,  reboot and revitalize Panos after twenty years with the agency with two  divisions of operation, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/\">Panos Profile and Panos Network<\/a>. <br \/><a class=\"jcepopup noicon\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"popup Panos Profile Slideshow\" href=\"..\/stories\/panosprofile_to_web\"><br \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"..\/stories\/panosprofile_to_web\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though both Evans and Francesca Sears, who Evans poached rather skillfully from her role as Editorial Director at Magnum, insist there is no hierarchy to be gleaned from the division of the photographers into two groups, Panos Profile and Panos Network, it is hard not to gravitate towards the \u2018top twenty\u2019. The fluidity of the apparent divide is stressed by its architects, however, and the rationale behind it means it will necessarily change when a photographer embarks upon or concludes a specific body of work.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sears was brought in as director of the Profile photographers, and she is clearly relishing the chance to be involved with every step of a project, moving beyond the purely administrative into more creative realms.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m excited by the idea of working on specific projects with this group of photographers. Panos have a good solid reputation and an ethos I like very much,\u2019 she says. Sears is also drawn to the collaborative atmosphere fostered at the agency across the road from her former employers, where she honed her ability to grapple with the multi-faceted nature and the broad and varied reach of much contemporary work.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Evans is unstinting in his praise of Sears:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We couldn\u2019t do it without particular resources \u2026 yes, I do mean Fran. What\u2019s good about her is that she obviously has background working in another big agency but she also has experience in publishing, working in galleries, and has an overview of everything that\u2019s going on. She\u2019s incredibly active, very driven and she gets things done. The challenge for her is that we have a great name, but it\u2019s in quite a small pond \u2013 we need to push on to the next level ourselves.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In looking at the list of the Profile photographers, it\u2019s clear that Evans\u2019 vision \u2013 and he admits to the list being a fait accompli before Sears\u2019 arrival \u2013 is to play to his agency\u2019s core strengths, choosing the more obviously progressive photographers like Chris De Bode or Yann Mingard as well as strong stable mates like Stefan Van Fleteren. Panos are well known in the field of social documentary, and for their work with NGOs, yet it is only now that Evans is beginning to tap the potential in this area, affected chiefly by two related factors: the death of the newspaper commission and the increased competition for NGO work. It occurred to me that there is a marked shift in where the interesting work can be found these days. Whereas once the most innovative creative work would find its home in magazines or newspapers, and stereotypical images would identify NGO literature from a two mile radius, these roles seem to be switching. Paolo Pellegrin\u2019s recent work with the Magnum agency for Save the Children is a case in point.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\nwriteFlash({\"allowfullscreen\":\"true\",\"allowscriptaccess\":\"always\",\"src\":\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=11240615&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1\",\"width\":\"400\",\"height\":\"225\"});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/11240615\">21ST CENTURY COMMUNISTS<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/panospictures\">panos pictures<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evans wants to start the conversations with NGOs earlier in the cycle, at the strategic stage, not least with Panos Institute, the aid agency that gave birth to Panos Pictures, and that still benefits from a share of the photo agency\u2019s profits. Evans says he has not shouted about his agency\u2019s charitable links in the past because he didn\u2019t want to be used so that people could feel good about themselves. \u2018It has to be a level playing field,\u2019 he says, while acknowledging that it\u2019s hardly the climate to invoke a kind of inverse snobbery about who your clients are or why they chose you. Working in this way means that Panos Pictures buils \u2018CSR\u2019- corporate social responsibility \u2013 in from the beginning. Perhaps they should offer their services to banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/bin\/panos2.dll\/go?a=disp&amp;t=gl-loader.html&amp;_storyState=1&amp;_tlid=1&amp;groupid=5&amp;galleryid=1109&amp;glbid=1578&amp;_pname=CDR&amp;si=22D56EC4110F446CBB6DCE3C460343\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: left;\" alt=\"panos_drake1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/panos_drake1.jpg?resize=280%2C193&#038;ssl=1\" height=\"193\" width=\"280\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>With Panos Profile, his longer term goal is to effect a change in how photographs are used in visual communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So many photographs are illustrative, \u201c says Evans. \u2018I\u2019m looking for people who want to interpret the world, for their singular vision. Not many people have harnessed the power of the web to use pictures in a truly interesting way with a\/v presentations. Photographers don\u2019t yet have the skill sets to make a decent a\/v package. They can acquire them, but they don\u2019t appear by magic. They need to get out there and do some radio journalism. While newspapers won\u2019t pay for multimedia presentations, they are still very much needed as crucial disseminators and distributers of the work. In terms of payment, we\u2019ve been paid by DFID and by NGOs, but the media obviously won\u2019t pay. It\u2019s the holy grail, to find that model, or so everyone says. I think it\u2019s more a question of building a programme of activities, with different jump-off points for different people and institutions.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/bin\/panos2.dll\/go?a=disp&amp;_m=1&amp;_s=1&amp;_ml=Stories&amp;_sl=&amp;_tlid=2&amp;t=gl-loader.html&amp;groupid=13&amp;galleryid=597&amp;glbid=1120&amp;page=1&amp;si=A1E98BFBC7FC4D8796B3B2A9828288&amp;rnd=3969.42\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: left;\" alt=\"panos_drake2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/panos_drake2.jpg?resize=280%2C193&#038;ssl=1\" height=\"193\" width=\"280\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>In photographers like Carolyn Drake, Evans\u2019 wish for singular vision is certainly granted. Her project Paradise Rivers has grown out of two rivers in Asia that have sustained human life for 40,000 years. The Amu and Syr Darya are two of the four Rivers of Paradise, according to medieval Islamic texts. Their changing course through the rise and fall of empires is rigorously and exquisitely documented by Drake, the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship last month. I can\u2019t remember the last time a body of work captivated me so vividly in content and execution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/bin\/panos2.dll\/go?a=disp&amp;t=gl-loader.html&amp;_storyState=1&amp;_tlid=1&amp;groupid=5&amp;galleryid=1116&amp;glbid=1585&amp;_pname=TVH&amp;si=D9D35DAEED004FB0AB954B41978493\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: left;\" alt=\"Tomas van Houtrye\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/panos_tomas1.jpg?resize=280%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" height=\"194\" width=\"280\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/bin\/panos2.dll\/go?a=disp&amp;t=photographerlink.html&amp;si=&amp;%20%20gallery=1_5_1116_1585&amp;photographer=Tomas%20van%20Houtryve\"> <\/a>Tomas Van Houtryve has also been busy, in his case documenting 21<sup>st<\/sup> century communists in Comrades Revisited. He\u2019s been to all the usual places \u2013 China, North Korea, Cuba, Nepal &#8211; but his imagery is far from commonplace. Like Drake\u2019s work, these photographs are world-class, and will certainly succeed in shifting the perception of the work of Panos photographers from the worthy but marginalized to the popular but smart.<br \/>Sears and Evans acknowledge that rumblings of dissent have been heard among those who are not in the initial Profile selection.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/bin\/panos2.dll\/go?a=disp&amp;_m=1&amp;_s=1&amp;_ml=Stories&amp;_sl=&amp;_tlid=2&amp;t=gl-loader.html&amp;groupid=13&amp;galleryid=1127&amp;glbid=1633&amp;page=1&amp;si=8EF1007FC0D148E5AECB6657C368CB&amp;rnd=3118.5.33\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: left;\" alt=\"Tomas van Houtrye\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/panos_tomas2.jpg?resize=280%2C197&#038;ssl=1\" height=\"197\" width=\"280\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>\u2018It\u2019s understandable,\u2019 says Evans. \u2018What\u2019s different is that it\u2019s not for all time. It\u2019s fluid. It all depends on where you are in your career, and which projects you are working on. We don\u2019t want to create an a and a b. We want to work with everyone \u2013 and we will do by redeploying staff in the agency. Fran has an eye out for all the photographers on our books, over a hundred of them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We can expect new and exciting projects from the likes of De Bode to be unveiled in the next few months. Stefan Van Fleteren, a superstar in his native Belgium, will seek to gain wider recognition with his new work from the photojournalist\u2019s Mecca: Congo. He has created 50 portraits from a cross section of Congolese society to commemorate the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Congolese independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Panos Profile celebrates its first official day of operation, a new Britain will be unveiled. The wind of change is in the air.
