Next week Christie\u2019s <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> will present what is claimed to be one of the finest collections of photographic literature &#8211; valued at around $2m &#8211; ever to be offered at auction. And later this month the V&amp;A will display a selection of similar titles from their own archives ranging chronologically from Fox Talbot\u2019s <em>Pencil of Nature<\/em> to Stephen Gill\u2019s muck-encrusted <em>Buried<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Given that the V&amp;A\u2019s collection of photographic books predates even the foundation of the museum, curator Marta Weiss could afford to be ambitious. \u201cI knew from the start that I wanted to do something that spanned the whole history of the medium, and because the display is an overview I included certain books that are masterpieces or are iconic \u2013 Eikoh Hosoe\u2019s <em>Ordeal by Roses<\/em>, for example, Brassai\u2019s <em>Paris by Night<\/em> and <em>William Eggleston\u2019s Guide<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/mhos.jpg?resize=350%2C347&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\u00a9 Eikoh Hosoe\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 347px;\" title=\"Ordeal by Roses Re-edited\" height=\"347\" width=\"350\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"photo_copyright\"><o:p>Eikoh Hosoe &#8211; <em>Ordeal by Roses Re-edited<\/em><\/o:p> <\/span><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI also wanted a range of books that used photographs in different ways, or tried to do different things with them &#8211; like Moholy-Nagy\u2019s <em>Painting Photography Film<\/em> or Werner Graff\u2019s <em>Here Comes the New Photographer!<\/em> Both used the photographic book as a manifesto for what modern photography could be, and for what it could include\u201d.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Alongside such well-known examples are somewhat unexpected inclusions. \u201cI started scanning the shelves, seeing what caught my eye, and making some discoveries. For instance, Josef Wlha\u2019s <em>Illustrirter Katalog <\/em>is made up of grids of tiny photographs &#8211; of architectural details and of things like ceramic stoves from castles in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Austria<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> &#8211; and, although it is only a catalogue of art objects, it is incredible to look at.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Other titles were chosen for their extraordinary and innovative design qualities: Hosoe\u2019s <em>Ordeal by Roses<\/em> is displayed with its illustration-lined, black velvet portfolio case. Masao Yamamoto\u2019s accordion book <em>Omizuao<\/em> measures fourteen feet wide when fully opened. Stephen Gill\u2019s <em>Buried<\/em> is still smeared with the Hackney shite that clung to it after exhumation (\u201cthe conservators are a bit taken aback\u201d).<o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/mruscha.jpg?resize=350%2C216&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\u00a9 Ed Ruscha\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 216px;\" title=\"Union, Needles, California\" height=\"216\" width=\"350\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_copyright\">Ed Ruscha &#8211; <em>Union, Needles, California<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Those unable to make it to the V&amp;A need not worry \u2013 many of the titles will be up for grabs at Christie\u2019s <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> next week. Graff\u2019s book is expected to fetch around $5,000; the Hosoe title, about $10,000; and Brassai\u2019s <em>Paris by Night,<\/em> as much as $45,000. Though punters might baulk at the $60,000 &#8211; $90,000 forecast for Jindrich Styrsky\u2019s by turn obscene and macabre <em>Emily Comes to me in a Dream<\/em>. Or the similar amount estimated for a complete set of Ed Ruscha\u2019s books (but you do at least get nineteen volumes for your money). Best go for something more affordable \u2013 perhaps Hans Bellmer\u2019s fiendishly rare, hand-coloured<em> Les Jeux de la Poupee<\/em>, yours for around $70,000<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/mbell.jpg?resize=268%2C350&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\u00a9 Hans Bellmer\" style=\"width: 268px; height: 350px;\" title=\"Les Jeux de la Poupee\" height=\"350\" width=\"268\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div><o:p>Hans Bellmer &#8211; <em>Les Jeux de la Poupee<\/em> <\/o:p><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Secrecy shrouds the identity of the serial (American) collector who, in little over ten years, has corralled this arguably unparalleled selection of modern photobooks. But it is said that, having amassed the collection, he is now content to dispose of it\u2026and is preparing to start collecting anew in another field. <em>Chacun a son gout<\/em>. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Of particular interest to collectors and historians alike is the fact that many of the titles bear authorial inscriptions that both confer uniqueness and suggest networks of friendships and collaborations. Brassai\u2019s book is inscribed to Andre Kertesz, whose own night photography had so impressed the author. Philip Jones Griffiths and Paul Fusco sign their books to Magnum chiefs. <em>The Americans<\/em> (first edition, naturally) is inscribed to Peter Turnley; <em>The Decisive Moment<\/em>, to Edward Weston.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">What price now \u2013 as books travel from shelves to glass cases &#8211; the claim that the cultural products of the modern era would undermine the status of traditional art objects, or the promise that \u201cthat which withers in the age of mechanical reproduction is the aura of the work of art?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Fine Photobooks from an Important Private Collection \u2013 Christie\u2019s, <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.
