{"id":574,"date":"2008-04-17T04:44:58","date_gmt":"2008-04-17T04:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.foto8.com\/live\/?p=574"},"modified":"2008-04-17T04:44:58","modified_gmt":"2008-04-17T04:44:58","slug":"new-horizons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.foto8.com\/live\/new-horizons\/","title":{"rendered":"New Horizons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Two markedly different <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> exhibitions, of work by Sze Tsung Leong and Lee Friedlander, test the potential of landscape photography as a vehicle for the exploration of diverse \u2013 global, local, political and pictorial &#8211; concerns<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">SzeTsung Leong spent his childhood between <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Britain<\/st1:country-region> and the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> \u2013 perhaps the experience contributed to the pronounced global aspect of his recent photography<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">A new series <em>Horizons<\/em>, on show at <st1:state w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:state>\u2019s Yossi Milo Gallery (until May 17), includes pictures made in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Inner Mongolia<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Italy<\/st1:country-region>, the Isle of Skye, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Jordan<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">India<\/st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Germany<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Using an 8 x 10 inch view camera, and a variety of medium formats, Leong has produced a series of unobstructed landscape images, often from an elevated viewpoint, that range from cityscapes to wilderness. The sheer diversity of locations and subjects \u2013 industrial or agrarian, poverty-stricken or wealthy, peopled or desolate, new-build or ancient \u2013 might be expected to deliver a similarly diverse set of pictures.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_copyright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/canalelo.jpg?resize=470%2C256&#038;ssl=1\" onmouseout=\"this.src='http:\/\/www.foto8.com\/home\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.foto8.com\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/canalelo.jpg?resize=470%2C256&#038;ssl=1';\" alt=\"\u00a9 Sze Tsung Leong, Courtesy Yossi Milo Gallery\" title=\"Canale della Giudecca I, Venezia, 2007\" style=\"width: 470px; height: 256px;\" class=\"review_photo\" height=\"256\" width=\"470\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/> Canale della Giudecca I, Venezia, 2007 \u00a9 Sze Tsung Leong, Courtesy Yossi Milo Gallery<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">But Leong\u2019s photographs are deliberately constructed to impose a unity, of sorts, on the scenes surveyed. This is achieved most obviously by the repeated positioning of the pictorial horizon in the same place (about a third of the way up the frame) in each image. Viewed on the gallery wall, where the pictures are uncaptioned and closely abutted, the same interchangeable horizon appears to run through far-flung, and proximate, locations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The resulting homogeneity, and the collapsing of geographical distance, are strategies designed to provoke a consideration of the contingency and fluidity of the relations between cultures and regions, As Leong writes in an accompanying essay: \u201cThe drifting horizon reveals the tendency for the arbitrariness of distinctions, the randomness of orders. Political borders, for example, rarely delineate essences \u2013 they are only the boundaries that overlap in the most dominant way\u2026Any way we divide up the world will overlap with other orders\u2026As a result, the boundaries of what we consider the local need not be limited to physically confined, specific places \u2013 the local can be mobile and dispersed.\u201d <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\">In contrast to the epic and global scale of <em>Horizons<\/em>, Lee Friedlander\u2019s <em>A Ramble in Olmsted Parks<\/em> (at the <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Metropolitan<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Museum<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> until May 11) explores the possibilities of a determinedly personal, local investigation of landscape photography.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Though the putative subject of Friedlander\u2019s pictures is the park designs of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, his photographs pursue compositional and pictorial themes that have been evident in much of his work, in a variety of locations, since the 1980\u2019s. Friedlander\u2019s interest in his designs appears to have been sparked by an initial commission for the Canadian Centre for Architecture; yet his photography continued long after completion of the brief.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial;\">To the extent that the Olmsted photographs reveal interests that are evident in similar Friedlander projects &#8211; of cherry blossom in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Tokyo<\/st1:city>, apple orchards in <st1:state w:st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:state>, olive groves in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Spain<\/st1:country-region>, or cacti in <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> \u2013 they bear witness to the possibilities and benefits of an unflinching, concentrated and extended exploration of formal pictorial concerns. Leong describes his own photographs as \u201cincomplete fragments\u201d. While for Friedlander: \u201cLandscape! The subject of landscape as a photographic possibility is both pleasurable and very difficult. The subject itself is simply perfect, and no matter how well you manage as a photographer, you will only ever give a hint as to how good the real thing is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family:
