Travellers are a minority group unique to Ireland. Photographer Don McNeill Healy spent over a year and a half documenting the lives of the Maughan family. Rosie Maughan, who is separated from her husband, looks after her children and her many grandchildren who visit regularly. The family caravan is located on Pigeon House Road, on a patch of wasteland in an industrial part of Dublin. Religion plays an important role in the lives of Traveller families \u2013 christenings and weddings are held at the local Catholic Church and feasts such as St Patrick\u2019s Day are celebrated with vigour. <\/p>\n
Their lifestyle is often chaotic and affected by the poverty of their living conditions. Issues such as alcoholism are common and children suffer at school from discrimination and a lack of support. In the face of such problems, the Maughan family radiates a genuine and unique sense of love and warmth.<\/p>\n
