If you look for the tiny village of Mos Espa on a map of Tunisia you will not find it. But if you drive 500 km south-east from the capital Tunis into the edge of the Sahara there in a scorching desert mirage it stands. It may be unmarked but it exists, 10 km off National Route 3 along a dirt road that is in places covered by the shifting sands.
To the north some 30 km away lies Tozeur, a bustling Tunisian desert town which has grown around an oasis. 10 km to the south is Nefta, a more relaxed settlement with its own spectacular date palm plantation fed by natural springs at an oasis. Beyond this, continuing south lies the open road through the heat and sand until you reach Algeria, 40 km away.
