(Right) An abandonned classroom on Nagashima Island. When Lepers were forced to live on the island their children were forced their too. Children and their parents are now permitted to live on the mainland.

In May 2001, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi ordered a governement statement containing a formal apology to the Lepers who were forcibly incarcerated from 1907 to 1996. For the first time in Japanese history, the government will not appeal the decision comdemning its activities. |
